HARMONY TIPS THE SCALE ON PATRIOT GOLF DAY CHARITY EFFORT
Harmony Golf Preserve raised $1,065 through a “grass roots” campaign during Patriot Golf Day. They explained the concept to each golfer and added a $1 charge to their golf fee from September 1-11, then matched that tally for a total donation of $2,130. In addition, the 9th and 18th greens were dressed with American Flags as the actual pinflags, and equipped with a special stand up device so the flags never hit the ground while golfers played the hole. The Harmony program began as Patriot Golf Day on September 1st like the national program, but wound up stretching the effort to a finish date of September 11th, in memory of those Americans lost in 2001.
Play Golf America along with Dan Rooney, PGA Professional and Fighter Squadron Pilot for the Oklahoma Air National Guard, created the September 1st fundraiser to generate money for the Wounded Warrior’s Foundation. Dan lead the charge after his return from two tours in Iraq as a way to stay involved with the armed services by integrated golfers in this initiative.
Jim Lentz, Chairman and Founder of Harmony Development, stepped up and matched the total donation amount at program end, “This is really something everyone embraced. We asked each player to make their $1 sacrifice, therefore felt it was Harmony’s place to do the same by matching what they gave”.
The town of Harmony also holds its annual Flag Day Golf Tournament and Festival on or around June 14th each year. The event is open to the public, as it selects a different veteran’s benefit each year and is meant to bring the community together in observance of National Flag Day. The national holiday proclaimed as the commemoration of the stars and stripes by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and later signed into law by President Truman in 1949. “The guys in the shop really took ownership and had fun with it”, said Brock Nicholas, General Manager, “We had proud veteran’s coming in to play golf dropping $20’s and $50’s in the jar when they heard about what was happening. And Mr. Lentz’s generous offer to match the donations was the perfect way to cap the celebration”.
